Ross Petty’s The Wizard of Oz

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Ross Petty Productions presents the premiere of

THE WIZARD OF OZ

The Wickedly Wacky Family Musical!

Starring Dan Chameroy, Jessica Holmes, Elicia MacKenzie,

Yvan Pedneault and Ross Petty

“Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.”  Truer words have never been spoken, especially when referring to the annual Ross Petty Holiday Family Musical!

Follow the yellow brick road to the Elgin Theatre this season and discover Ross Petty Productions’ world premiere of THE WIZARD OF OZ, an original Petty production and 16th consecutive holiday show, starring Dan Chameroy, Jessica Holmes, Elicia MacKenzie, Yvan Pedneault and Ross Petty.

Dorothy, played by Elicia MacKenzie in her panto debut, made a smooth transition from an innocent novitiate in The Sound Of Music to a rock and roll chick in Rock Of Ages, and now segues seamlessly into an adventure-seeking city girl from Toronto who finds herself transported, via snow storm, to a wickedly wacky new world.  Accompanied by her dog Toto and Aunt Plumbum–yes Dan Chameroy returns to the Panto for the third time to reprise the role of the man-hungry Plumbum von Botox–Dorothy is helped along the way by Splenda the Good Witch, played by the lusciously loopy Jessica Holmes of Royal Canadian Air Farce fame.

The Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow, the funniest trio since Ford, Ford and Hudak, join Dorothy on her quest to find the Wizard of Oz, because “there’s no place like home.” Yvan Pedneault, recent star of We Will Rock You and Rock Of Ages is a magically challenged Tin Man, Stratford’s Steve Ross is the Cowardly Lion, the Shaw Festival’s Kyle Blair portrays the Scarecrow, and fan-favourite Eddie Glen will appear as The Wizard Of Oz himself!

A Petty panto is no such thing without Ross Petty who will once again trod the boards as the force of farcical evil, the Wicked Witch of the West.  This winter, somewhere over the rainbow–blame global warming–fractured fairy tales will reign!

HelpMeSara Parenting Teleseminars

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Sara Dimerman, best known as HelpMeSara, announces the launch of her exciting new Teleseminar Series, as seen at www.helpmesara.com.

The Teleseminar line up for 2011 focuses on helping parents with a multitude of different concerns - from every day behavioural issues to parenting children who are anxious, inattentive, developmentally delayed, speech/language delayed, experiencing learning difficulties, depressed or coping with divorce. Parents can select from seminars that are geared towards their individual needs and ages of their children - from infancy through the teen years.

Seminars are offered over one to four sessions and range in cost from $75.00 to $199.00 depending on the length and duration of the seminar.

The beauty of a teleseminar” says Dimerman, “is that parents don’t need to find a babysitter or leave the house on a cold, snowy night. All they need is the desire to learn and a telephone. Unless they choose, no one can hear them and of course, no one can see them. So, attending in their pyjamas and slippers is entirely optional!”

Dimerman is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. For over twenty years she has provided counselling to children, adolescents, individual adults, couples and families. She is the author of two parenting books (”Am I A Normal Parent?” - Hatherleigh Press, 2008 and “Character is The Key” - Wiley & Sons, 2009) and is seen on television, heard on radio and quoted in newspapers and magazines across North America. Dimerman says that along with being able to lend her expertise, she has hand picked other experts to co host the seminars, so that parents benefit by being able to ask questions and learn from two professionals.

Plans for 2012 include additional parenting seminars along with seminars for couples, individual adults and teenagers.

The Teleseminar Series will begin on April 7th, 2011 and is available to parents across Canada and the United States. Registration has already begun.

For more information or to register, visit http://www.helpmesara.com/ or call Sara Dimerman at 905 882-7690.

Family Literacy Day 2011

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Record number of registered events along with thousands of participants rally on January 27 to Play for Literacy in celebration of learning

(Toronto, ON - January 20, 2011) – The countdown is on before Canada comes together to celebrate Family Literacy Day. ABC Life Literacy Canada is encouraging all Canadians to make family literacy a priority on January 27 by participating in a Family Literacy Day event or activity in your community or in the home.

Canadians have stepped up in record numbers to rally around the cause as they paint Canada orange by registering their community and family events online at FamilyLiteracyDay.ca. With 846 events currently registered, it is not too late to plan your own event or activity or plan to participate in one in your area.

Now in its 13th year, Family Literacy Day was developed by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 to celebrate adults and children reading and learning together, and to encourage Canadians to spend at least 15 minutes a day enjoying a learning activity together. Family Literacy Day provides focus and encouragement on the issue and with recently released opinion data collected by research firm Ipsos Reid, showing that a high percentage of Canadian adults lack confidence in helping their children with homework, engaging in this celebration is a great way to foster a love of learning within the home.

“As Canadians Play for Literacy this year, we are encouraging adults to have fun with learning through the use of play-centered activities which will help inspire a love of learning in their children,” commented Margaret Eaton, president of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “Literacy continues to be an important issue in Canada as four out of 10 working age Canadians struggle with low literacy and Family Literacy Day provides national focus on the cause.”

Play for Literacy can include all types of play that encourages literacy and numeracy development as well as comprehension skills, such as board games, card games and imaginative self-created activities and games. Games, and the carefree act of playing, provide a fun outlet in which individuals of all ages can engage in activities that inherently provide new learning or opportunities to improve one’s reading, writing, math and comprehension skills.

A complete list of events in communities across Canada, as well as resource materials and the Family Literacy Day online activity book presented by HSBC can be found at www.FamilyLiteracyDay.ca.

Disney on Ice - A Family Outing

Monday, December 27th, 2010

WRITTEN BYDisney on Ice
Janna Nadler

Who can resist Mickey and the gang?  Disney just seems to get it right when it comes to family outings and entertainment; that’s why we were so excited to head down to the Rogers Centre for Disney on Ice presents Mickey and Minnie’s Magical Journey.

My husband, who has a slight obsession for all things Disney, was looking forward to taking in the music and waving hello to the Characters (yes, he actually waved).  I was looking forward to the figure skating and family-time.  The kids were looking forward to the ice cream and cotton candy.  Don’t get me wrong, they were really excited for the show – in conjunction with the snacks.

We arrived early and settled into our seats.  Familiar music played in the background:  Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid.  My daughter began reading the program (my son had gone with my husband to get – surprise – snacks).  I checked my blackberry for e-mails (yes, I’m one of those moms); checked on the baby, who we’d left behind at grandma’s; consulted my play-date agenda for the winter-break… the lights went down and the show began.

Jackpot.

The seats in front of us were occupied by small children and we had a clear view of the stage.

I am five feet tall. Let me tell you that small luxuries, such as this, matter.

Rats.

The kid in front of me has one of those light-up, swirling, noisy, hand-held, costs-a-fortune-impulse-buys (available for purchase both out by the concessions and on either side of the stage).  All around us, Disney items were available for purchase and consumption: taste, touch, hear, see, and smell.  We were immersed.  But, this is to be expected, I think.

Four Disney musicals – The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch and Peter Pan – are woven into one interconnected show.  The storylines are condensed, but retain the essential moments and, most importantly, our favourite songs.

I’m not trying to be sappy here, but the best ice dancing occurred during the love songs (“Can you feel the love tonight,”  “Kiss the Girl”).  I must give credit, though, to the 15-20 monkeys at the beginning who really just stole the show from Mickey et.al.  Perhaps, though, monkeys are naturally better figure skaters than mice?

My daughter was amazed at how “flexible” the dancers were.  She also wondered why Mickey “makes all those hand motions” when he talks.

The variety of sets, props, and costumes were particularly impressive.  Ariel looked longingly at Prince Eric on the upper-stage; Tinkerbell and Peter Pan (suspended from the ceiling) “flew” over the stage; small fireworks punctuated the storyline; a huge inflatable crocodile finally ate Captain Hook.

My children liked the bubbles released into the air during “Under the Sea.”

For Disney enthusiasts, the show was “classic” Disney.  We even clapped for Tinkerbell (you know, to show her we “believe”).  There were numerous familiar references to Disney storylines, characters, and songs.  It wasn’t exactly “fresh,” but it was pleasantly nostalgic.

My children said they liked the funny parts the best.

Yes, Disney still does slapstick humour; and, yes, children still get a “kick” out of it (pun intended; you can all groan now).  Goofy keeps falling on the ice and dropping his suitcases.  Captain Hook kicks Smee and calls him silly names.

My favourite part?  I really did love having some special family time.  I was happy to give my children these special treats – an outing, a show, sticky-messy junk food…

The moment I was most impressed by Disney?  That would be when I found a small, packaged wet-nap at the bottom of that bag of cotton candy.

Double-jackpot.

Disney On Ice presents Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey is taking audiences on a fun-filled tour to four exciting destinations filled with favorite Disney friends at the Rogers Centre in Toronto from December 25, 2010 to January 2, 2011.  You can save $5 dollars on the upcoming show by using the promo code BLOG. This offer is not valid on Rinkside, Front Row or VIP seats. Some restrictions may apply. Tickets can be purchased by visiting Ticketmaster.ca or by calling 416-870-8000. Disney on Ice presents Toy Story 3

Disney On Ice presents Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3 Takes #1 Movie in the World to the Ice

Cutting Edge Projection Technology Takes Audiences to the Edge of their Seats and Beyond in High-Energy Live Ice Spectacular

Vienna, Va. – June 22, 2010 –– Toy Story 3, the record-breaking #1 movie in the world, is so hot it’s cool as everyone’s favourite toys take to the ice in Disney On Ice presents Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3!  An award-winning creative team and a cast of world-class skaters are bringing Woody, the pull-string cowboy; space ranger Buzz Lightyear; Jessie, the yodeling cowgirl; and the rest of the gang to fans and families around the country in this brand-new live ice spectacular produced by Feld Entertainment.  This fast-paced and witty tale of friendship launches a 2-year, 75-city North American tour on September 3rd in Lakeland, FL.The show will stop in Toronto this March Break: March 16-20/2011 for an exclusive engagement at Rogers Centre.

To enhance this live experience, the production will feature state-of-the-art projection design, allowing adults and children alike to virtually shrink down as Andy’s room is transformed from human to toy-sized.  Families are whisked away, reliving iconic moments from Toy Story and Toy Story 2 before they embark on the brand-new adventure of Toy Story 3.  This innovative 3D technology, a first for any Disney On Ice show, blends four separate images into one massive 3D projection using the entire ice surface to create oversized effects and scenic elements, altering the audience’s perception of scale.  Memorable scenes take on a new life as a pinball machine of monumental proportion is created at Pizza Planet, with the massive pinball table projected onto the ice and the score board on the stage behind it.  This perspective, among many others throughout the show, reinforces the audience’s experience as a toy-sized spectator.

“An award-winning team of artists, designers and technicians are redefining the theatre of ice with a show that challenges the audience’s perception of scale,” says Producer Nicole Feld. “Disney On Ice presents Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3 is Feld Entertainment’s most innovative show ever.”

Disney On Ice presents Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3 begins as Andy prepares for college and is deciding the fate of his favourite childhood pals.  Woody reminds the gang that they are still Andy’s toys and they reminisce over their many adventures as Buzz Lightyear defeats Evil Emperor Zurg; Woody meets up with Jessie on the set of their TV show, “Woody’s Roundup”; and Slinky Dog, Rex, Bullseye, Hamm, Barbie, and everyone’s favorite spuds — Mr. Potato Head and Mrs. Potato Head — keep the audience laughing with their comedic antics.  This unforgettable troupe of toys takes matters into their own hands when they find themselves trapped at Sunnyside Daycare and at the mercy of some rambunctious toddlers. A toy box full of new faces, led by Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear, temporarily detains them, but thanks to Woody, they devise a plan to get back home again.  A hilarious and daring escape mission ensues as the gang endures a comical series of mishaps to ensure that “no toy gets left behind.”

“Disney On Ice presents Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3 is the only place where you can experience the excitement and adventure of Toy Story 3 and the defining character moments of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 right in your hometown,” says Producer Kenneth Feld. “We’re bringing families the ultimate Toy Story experience in a sensational live production.”

Bringing toys to life is no easy feat and to make the world of Toy Story transition to the ice, Kenneth Feld and Nicole Feld assembled a team of industry experts, including:

Disney On Ice presents Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3 is just one of the many Feld Entertainment productions touring the globe in 2010-2011.  Additional productions playing North America beginning this fall include Disney On Ice presents Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey, Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate!, Disney On Ice presents Princess Classics, Disney On Ice presents Princess Wishes, Disney Live! Mickey’s Rockin’ Road Show and Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show.  With a growing roster of more than 30 Disney On Ice and Disney Live! spectaculars, Feld Entertainment brings the magic of Disney On Ice and Disney Live! to fans all over the world.
