CN Tower’s New 3D Theatre

June 23 (Toronto, ON)  Premiering Canada Day, July 1st, the CN Tower will launch a new 3D theatre experience featuring The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D, the Toronto premiere of the first 3D surf film ever created.

“We are always looking at innovative ways to make the CN Tower experience more exciting and our state of the art high definition 3D theatre featuring a spectacular film about surfing in Tahiti will be an exciting new addition to the lineup of thrilling experiences that we offer,” said Jack Robinson, Chief Operating Officer. 

Visitors will be able to experience the phenomenon of new, improved 3D at the CN Tower’s new state of the art high definition theatre featuring The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D.  The Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D is a 45 minute film created by Canada’s own Stephen Low Productions.  Audiences are immersed into the stunning beauty of an island paradise on a quest to find the perfect wave-riding experience. The film follows nine-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater and Tahitian surfer Raimana Van Bastolaer as they seek out the best waves at Tahiti’s famed reef at Teahupo’o. As their quest unfolds, the audience is plunged beneath the surface of things, to explore the magic of Tahiti, the life of the reef and the hidden forces at work shaping ocean waves and the islands that lie in their path. 

Hailing from Montreal, Director Stephen Low is one of Canada’s most experienced filmmakers, bringing to his work a unique storytelling vision and an understanding of the language and tremendous possibilities of 3D cinema.

State of the Art Upgrades at Maple Leaf Cinema

The CN Tower’s newly upgraded Maple Leaf Cinema is one of Toronto’s most versatile theatre venues used for public as well as private event screenings.  The Maple Leaf Cinema is now fully equipped with the latest in Digital Cinema Technology with a State of the Art High Definition DCI Compliant Projection system from Christie with full 2K resolution.  The theatre also features the latest in digital 3D cinema technology for visitors to enjoy the new and improved 3D experience.  The projection is driven by the latest video server technology for all modern digital cinema formats coming out of Hollywood and independent production houses.  The theatre also includes a new bigger, brighter screen and a complete Digital Cinema Audio experience enabling guests to hear the movies like never before in complete state of the art digital cinema surround sound. Lastly, state of the art 3D viewing technology by Xpand using an electronic shutter glass system provides a brighter, clearer and overall better 3D experience.

The CN Tower’s newly upgraded Maple Leaf Cinema is the latest addition to Canada’s National Tower.  In 2006 new meeting space was added at the base of the Tower to meet the growing demand for meeting and event space.  In 2007 an innovative energy efficient LED exterior lighting system was installed that now features a nightly light show and special occasion lighting throughout the year.  In 2008 the CN Tower introduced the world’s highest glass fronted and glass floor paneled elevators. 

Celebrating Canada Day (June 29-July 4)

The launch of the CN Tower’s newest adventure coincides with Canada Day celebrations.  Visitors to the CN Tower from June 29-July 4 can enter to win fantastic prizes including a CN Tower children’s birthday party for 10, tickets to Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria performance on July 3rd at the Air Canada Centre and more.  Also on July 1st celebrate Canada Day at Canada’s National Tower with spectacular views overlooking the city and country!  Visitors to the CN Tower will receive handheld Canadian flags and pins (while quantities last).

ABOUT WORLD ROUTES SUMMER FESTIVALS

World Routes is Harbourfront Centres annual summer series of FREE festivals running every weekend from Canada Day through Labour Day. World Routes explores ideas in contemporary culture, bringing together rich, artistic traditions from around the globe. For summer 2010, Harbourfront Centre explores the idea of “globalocal” (global to local and local to global) with a festival line-up promising to entertain, stimulate and provoke.

CANADA DAY: July 1

Its Canadas 143rd birthday! Harbourfront Centre brings together artists celebrating all things that sound, feel, look and taste like Canada. This free festival celebrates what Canada has to offer with home-grown music, dance, games, stories and, of course, delicious Canadian food.

The Toronto International Flamenco Festival Canadian Showcase

Diabolo Juggling featuring Vronique Provencher

Originating in China thousands of years ago, the diabolo has become a staple in the local juggling and circus communities. Harbourfront Centre presents one of the hottest Canadian performers of this exhilarating art form.

L’Orchestre Septentrional

The members of L’Orchestre Septentrional (an 18-piece big band) have played together for over 60 years and are Haitis oldest and most renowned musical ambassadors. Theyve made music through dictatorships, democratic interludes, coup dtats and chaos. On July 3, they give voice to a country with the worlds attention at its doorstep; a true Hot Spot in 2010.

BEATS, BREAKS & CULTURE (BBC) Presented by NOW Magazine: July 9 - 11

This year marks the seventh anniversary of Beats, Breaks & Culture, one of North America’s leading electronic music and culture festival. With each passing festival, BBC has evolved alongside contemporary, left-of-centre music genres that push the boundaries of traditional electronic music.

Pop, Lock & Load Break Dance Competition

The Pop Lock & Load break dance competition returns for its seventh year with dancersfrom all over the globe competing for $1,000 in the battle of all dance battles!

TMDP

TMDP is a Canadian electronic music duo consisting of Jeffrey Addison and GavinRough. Their music is a fusion of synth-house, nu-disco, R&B and electro. The pair isknown for improvised live remixes (of their own music) leading to almost unrecognizableone-time compositions.

Kid Koala with The Slew Live: Six Turntables Meet the ex-Wolfmother Rhythm Section

Renowned Canadian turntablist Kid Koala has formed a new musical project based on adefunct documentary film score with guitarist Dylan Dynomite D Frombach and Wolfmothers former rhythm section.

EXPRESSIONS OF BRAZIL: July 16 - 18

This inaugural three-day festival connects Brazil and Canada by showcasing both international and local artists in a variety of disciplines including music, dance, film, visual arts, theatre, family activities, workshops and culinary arts.

Roda de Samba

Roda de Samba is a samba group that performs the typical Brazilian hangout:musiciansplay popular roots samba songs accompanied by unmistakable Brazilian drumming and its awesome vibe.

Mallu Magalhaes

At 17 years old Mallu Magalhes writes and sings in Portuguese, English and French, andplays the guitar, harmonica, piano, blow keyboard. At Expressions of Brazil, she performssongs from her self-titled debut and sophomore albums.

Brazilian Food Demo - Chef Mario Cassini

Caj Restaurant owner and executive chef Mario Cassini puts on a food demo withcontemporary dishes that reflect the diverse edible history of Brazil.

LOVE, SASKATCHEWAN: July 23 - 25

Toronto unites with Saskatchewan to celebrate arts and culture and to shatter stereotypes about what defines Saskatchewan in the 21st century. Through a look at the Rider Nation, this festival aims to incorporate one of the great Saskatchewan cultural unifiers, the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. Rider pride, rodeo, cowboy culture and distinct Aboriginal artistic forms are just some of the ways we are able to explore this unique and fiercely proud province.

As one of Canadas most interesting musical exports, Wide Mouth Mason is a trio of musicians from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan who represent the heart of a nation built on many different cultures.

Saskatchewan-based pianist, guitarist and singer, Little Miss Higgins, performs anassortment of country blues songs.

Caribbean culture is celebrated through music, food and dance at this years Island Soul festival! The aim is to bridge Caribbean culture with the rest of the world and to showcase how Caribbean culture has morphed, mutated, and then returned to its original form.

Queen Ifrica

Presented by State Farm, Queen Ifrica, daughter of ska legend Derrick Morgan, is the hottest female roots/reggae vocalist since Marcia Griffiths. Pan in the Park

Conjo: Head Wrapping Expos and Workshop

This festival puts a spotlight on the evolution of classical music, paying close attention to how the East, West and everything in between has come together to create new roles within the genre.

Global classical traditions meet in an orchestral project that defines the essence of globalocal the ensemble mostly is made up of new immigrants to Italy from 11 countries speaking eight languages! Djoumbush and Warhol Dervish

Based in Montreal, Djoumbush draws its name from the phonetic spelling of ‘cmbs’, an instrument played mainly in Turkey, most often in Roma (’gypsy’) music. WarholDervish is a chamber music collective active in Montreal’s baroque and contemporary classical music scene. Together, they collaborate to bring a whole new dimension to thequestion of What is Classical?

The Labyrinth Project

The Hot & Spicy Food Festival is back hot, spicy, sultry and sweet. The 13th anniversary of the festival explores diverse hot food experiences from around the globe. Well explore the lost origins of spices and foods, and their migrations and transformations as they move across the world and across time.

Longos International Iron Chef Competition

Delhi 2 Dublin

Vancouver-based Delhi 2 Dublin is a group of five musicians who mash up electronic and world music, keeping it heavy on the Bhangra, Celtic and Dub flavours. Fusing tabla, fiddle, dhol, Punjabi vocals and electric sitar with scorching electronic beats, thecrew takes listeners on a wild ride through global sounds and synchronicities.

The Rhyming Chef

The first-ever Fortune Cooking Food Festival is a three-day cultural feast that shines a spotlight on East and Southeast Asia. Visitors are offered a taste of some of the best traditional and contemporary Asian dishes prepared by the citys best culinary artists.

TELUS TAIWANfest: CROSS OVER: Aug. 27 - 29

TELUS TAIWANfest returns to celebrate the cultural treasures of Taiwan with performances by artists from the Island of Taiwan and Canada. The festival explores productions and exhibitions with the intermingling of Dutch, Canadian, Japanese, Chinese and indigenous peoples heritage within the cultural history of Taiwan.

I-Wan-Jan Puppet Troupe

Founded by the world-renowned master puppeteer, Tien-Lu Lee, I-Wan-Jan, literallymeans “vivid mimicry. In his skillful hands, these wooden puppets come alive as if they were real people.

Aphasia

Using the name of the medical condition for the inability to speak, this instrumental band speaks for the voiceless with their music that combines post-rock, punk and metal.

Kou Chou Ching

Showcasing the work of leading contemporary artists from Canada and around the world, Ashkenaz 2010 brings into focus the cultural vibrancy and interconnectedness of Jewish and non-Jewish communities at home and abroad.

The Other Europeans

An international gathering of 14 leading Klezmer (Yiddish) and Lautari (Roma) musicians, this new intercultural supergroup creates powerful, deeply emotional andvirtuosic music.

Balkan Beat Box

Combining the musical traditions of Europe and the Mediterranean rim with rock, reggaeand electronic music, Balkan Beat Boxs fearless 21st century fusion has earned them buzz band status across Europe, Israel and North America. Their relentlessly energetic and carnivalesque live shows are quickly becoming the stuff of legend, building wild anticipation for their Toronto debut at the 2010 Ashkenaz Festival.
