Family Recipe Binder

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Have you ever made a fantastic recipe from a favourite recipe book, magazine, newspaper or friend just once, and never again? The recipe is then forgotten, or you can no longer locate it?

We have an idea to solve this problem … the family recipe binder!

Take a binder and keep it on the book shelf with your other recipe books. Use simple dividers to organize appetizers, salads, soups, poultry, fish, meat, pasta, side dishes, cakes and cookies etc.. When you make a recipe that you want to cook or bake again, copy it into the binder, even if it is in a book. You will be able to access it and find meal inspirations quickly.

Bon Appetit!

My Gourmet ‘Cooking Club’

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Every four to six weeks, six girlfriends and I get together for our Gourmet Club. It started off as a much larger  group of twenty individuals brought together from different places. Our common bond at that time was our love of cooking. We all had binders, and after choosing a theme for each get-together, we would sign up for the different parts of the meal to eat together and bring the recipes we made.

Over eight years later, we have great fun and the bonds are real. The binders and recipes are long forgotten, and our club is more like potluck along a chosen theme. We bring dishes and we dish. It is a night out. Tonight’s theme was ’six ingredients’ or less (I made Ricotta Gnocchi from Apples for Jam by Tessa Kiros - so easy and tasty).

I recommend choosing an interest and finding friends to enjoy a regular night out together, whether it be a book club, cooking, sports, games, beading, scrapbooking or other activity. It is important to take time for yourself (even if it is after children’s bedtime), and can be as good as a holiday.

FYI: The Cooking Club Cookbook: Six Friends Show You How to Bake, Broil, and Bond (which post-dates the start of our group) apparently explains the concept of creating a cooking club and provides starter recipes. You can find reviews at http://www.amazon.ca/Cooking-Club-Cookbook-Friends-Broil/dp/0375759689/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226030586&sr=8-2.
