Snow White Theatre Review

Monday, December 10th, 2012

Ross Petty Productions fractured fairytales, take the stage at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto each year, from November to the beginning of January. I know this because for the past five years, the event has become a favourite holiday tradition for my family. Each year, we plan for our family night out, knowing that it will be filled with laughter, song and merriment. This year was no exception.

On Saturday night, we eagerly settled into our seats for the 7 pm show of SNOW WHITE, The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical, our vocal chords warmed up to boo at the villain, played by Ross Petty. You see, Ross Petty’s productions are done in pantomime style, meaning, that the audience is encouraged to get involved and respond to the actors on stage at various times during the show.

We knew not to expect the Disney version of Snow White, which made the anticipation so much more fun. We appreciated that the show would be loosely based on the tale of Snow White, but would be filled with lots of surprises and familiar tunes (think Gangnam Style and Firework). Looking around, it was clear that both adults and children found the play hysterical because the humour is aimed at both audiences. The Evil Queen is named FarFromPoopin, and current events form part of the jokes.

In SNOW WHITE, The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical, Bond 007 and a host of fairytale characters must come to Snow White’s rescue when she is banished from Queen FarFromPoopin’s Kingdom. What follows includes a magic mirror, adventure, romance, intrigue, fabulous singing, dancing, laughs and lots of well scripted (and partially improvised) silliness.  #socialmediareferencesabound

It is rare that one will go to a production where the actors have as much fun as the audience, but it was so obviously the case at Snow White, and the cast’s enjoyment was infectious.

Our kids oohed and aahed about this part and that on our way home in the car (along with my husband and I). They agreed that their favourite scene was a beauty contest between Queen FarFromPoopin and Snow White to decide who would be able to remain in the Kingdom. No spoiler alerts here.

Snow WhiteIf you are worried about getting a happily ever after at the end, you won’t be disappointed, both on and off the stage. And there is still time to join in the excitement, as SNOW WHITE, The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical is continuing onstage until January 5, 2013.

Ross Petty Productions presents SNOW WHITE The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical! is playing at the Elgin Theatre, 189 Yonge Street, until January 5, 2013. For a complete performance schedule visit WWW.ROSSPETTY.COM. Tickets are on sale now: $85/$75/$64/$27 Adults • $59 Children under 12 • $236 Family 4-Pack (prices do not include fees/taxes). Tickets can be purchased online at www.rosspetty.com by phone at 1.855.599.9090 or in person at the Elgin Theatre Box Office. All-Canadian Cast to star in

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s

THE WIZARD OF OZ

Wizard of OzProducers Bill Kenwright, The Really Useful Group, David Mirvish, Troika Entertainment & Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures are delighted to announce the all-Canadian cast of the North American premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new stage adaptation of THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Danielle Wade of LaSalle, Ontario, who captured the title of Canada’s Top Dorothy in CBC TV’s “Over The Rainbow,” stars as Dorothy.  An exciting new discovery, Danielle recently completed her second year at the University of Windsor in acting.  This is her first professional engagement. As she famously said on the finale of the TV show: “I’ve never auditioned for anything before. I hope they all go like this.”

Playing opposite Danielle in another of the most iconic roles is one of Canada’s most respected and honoured actors: Gemini-winner, film and theatre veteran, Cedric Smith stars as the Wizard.

Lisa Horner, star of Shaw and Stratford productions and best known for her role as Claire in the Fringe hit My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, plays the Wicked Witch.  Actor and choreographer Mike Jackson stars as the Tin Man.  Star of Mamma Mia! and a Dora Award winner for his play High Life, Lee MacDougall plays the Lion. Jamie McKnight, known for his performance in The Producers and as one of the Canadian Tenors, stars as the Scarecrow and Robin Evan Willis, star of many Shaw Festival productions, plays Glinda.

The ensemble includes: Larry Mannell as Uncle Henry, Charlotte Moore as Aunt Em, Jordan Bell, Eric Coles, Sam DiGiuseppe, Chelsey Duplak, John Edwards, Kelly Grainger, Sarah Higgins, Julianne Hobby, Jason Huska, Zak Kearns, Ayrin Mackie, Anthony MacPherson, Stewart Adam McKensy, Julia McLellan, Kristen Pottle, Alana Randall, Adam Sergison, Sarah Slywchuk, Andrew Taylor, Jesse Weafer, Cleopatra Williams, Ryan Wilson and Alyson Workman.

Performances for THE WIZARD OF OZ begin December 20, 2012.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of THE WIZARD OF OZ is an enchanting adaptation of the all-time classic, totally reconceived for the stage by the award-winning creative team that recently delighted Toronto audiences of all ages with the revival of The Sound of Music.

Developed from the ever popular MGM screenplay, this new production contains all the beloved songs from the Oscar®-winning movie score, all the favourite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way, including new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Click your heels together and join Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little dog Toto, as they journey through the magical land of Oz to meet the Wizard and obtain their hearts’ desires. Renowned for its sophisticated and good-natured humour, clever songs and noteworthy guest stars, “Phineas and Ferb” is a fan favourite in every major territory.  It airs on Disney Channels and Disney XD channels in more than 168 countries and in 34 languages, reaching more than 279 million unduplicated Total Viewers worldwide.

With a 100 episodes and counting, a live action/animated talk show and an upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie, the success of “Phineas and Ferb” has created demand for extensions of it and opportunities for other Disney divisions including Walt Disney Records, Disney Consumer Products (action figures, apparel, accessories, grocery and health and beauty items), Disney Publishing (books, comics), Disney Interactive Studios (Nintendo DS and Wii games) and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (DVDs).

Ross Petty presents Snow White

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Ross Petty Productions Announces Casting for

SNOW WHITE

The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical!

Starring Graham Abbey, Eddie Glen, Melissa O’Neil and Ross Petty

With Reid Janisse, Billy Lake and Bryn McAuley

2012 is shaping up to be a tumultuous year for Snow White, from the bad apple film Mirror Mirror to the scandalous affair swirling around her follow-up film Snow White and the Huntsman. Happily for fans of Robert Pattinson, Snow White will dial down her raging hormones and return to the safety of her first love, live theatre, and trod the boards this holiday season in Ross Petty Productions’ 17th annual holiday pantomime,

SNOW WHITE The Deliciously Dopey Family Musical
. The production runs November 23, 2012 –

January 5, 2013 at the historic Elgin Theatre.

In this fractured rendering of SNOW WHITE, audiences can expect a plethora of pop culture favourites. The production stars Canadian Idol winner Melissa O’Neil, who made her panto debut as Belle in Petty’s 2010 production of Beauty and the Beast. O’Neil is delighted to return to the Elgin Theatre fresh off her gig in the Broadway production of Stratford’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Stratford leading man Graham Abbey, standing in for the Seven Dwarfs, takes a cue from his portrayal of the dashing hero on CBC-TV’s The Border, and easily steps into the iconic role of super spy 007.  “Abbey . . . Graham Abbey,” won the Dora Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male in Ross Petty Productions’ 2001 version of Snow White And The Magnificent Seven.

And while it wasn’t obvious to Hollywood execs which starlet could ultimately reign as Snow White’s evil stepmother, Ross Petty ultimately won out over Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron and will once again become “the fairest of them all” in this winter’s stage version of SNOW WHITE.

Second City alumnus Reid Janisse makes his panto debut as one of the Three Little Pigs and voice actor and impressionist Bryn McAuley (the voice of Caillou) steps in as Little Red Riding Hood. Billy Lake, currently in his 6th season at the Shaw Festival, tackles the role of Pinocchio, and Eddie Glen, everyone’s favourite red head, returns as Petty’s bumbling sidekick.

Head Lice and Kids

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

WRITTEN BY
Taryn Kukle, The Lice People

The incidence of head lice in schools, camps, and day care facilities has become an issue of great concern. Head lice is very common among school children.  Contrary to popular belief, lice are not a sign of dirtiness.  In fact, the the opposite is true: lice prefer a clean environment and incidence is on the rise.

Lice are small insects that feed on blood from the scalp several times a day, and their eggs are called “nits.”  They spread very quickly among school-agers because children are frequently in close proximity to one another.  Lice do not jump or fly, but can move quickly along hair strands and make their way to a neighbouring scalp.  Education is key to containing the outbreaks.

For many parents going through a lice infestation for the first time, this can be overwhelming.  It is not always easy to recognise what a louse looks like, and it is even more difficult to identify a nit, which can easily be confused with dandruff.  Parents may not have the time necessary to dedicate to treatment and are unable to miss work hours to treat their children.  Children are often not allowed in school until the infestation is cleared putting them at a disadvantage with their schoolwork.

Traditional methods of eradicating head lice include over-the-counter products, olive oil, vinegar, mayonnaise, kerosene, Cetaphil and Vaseline.  Many of these products which are available at local pharmacies contain harmful pesticides.  Since the use of these lice treatments has been ongoing over the years, the lice have become resistant to them, leaving live bugs and unhatched nits in the hair.  Using food products to eliminate lice can cause both salmonella as well as discomfort to open sores on a child’s head from scratching.  Unfortunately there is no magic potion or device.  All lice and their eggs must be manually removed from the head in order to prevent reinfestation.

The Lice People, implement the most effective and innovative new treatments available, namely the Shepherd Method.  The new strategy is dedicated to family convenience and comfort for the child.  The salon environment provided is geared towards children, making the experience a calming, yet fun one.  This concept is the first of its kind, and is a convenient and easy alternative to traditional methods.  Every employee is expertly trained to examine each strand of hair and recognise lice and nits.  There is no other method as thorough and effective, and this service is offered in a friendly, family atmosphere.

At the salon children are made to feel comfortable, and may watch a movie while going through treatment, so they are entertained.  The salon is well-lit, and all staff are expertly trained, providing you with peace of mind knowing the treatment will be effective.  During the first visit, trained experts will comb through the hair to remove much of the infestation.  A strand-by-strand examination of the hair will be performed to ensure complete eradication.  This is followed by a check done by a second technician.  There are also two follow up sessions included to make sure the treatment has been 100% effective.  Children will be provided with a letter of clearance so they may return to school immediately.

The Lice People are also available for home visits if you find it difficult to reach the salon.  They are even available for trips to schools and camps to do professional, thorough head checks.  Tips are also available on how you can make sure you home is louse-free.  There is a plethora of information and support available through The Lice People.  These, and other valuable resources are available online at http://www.thelicepeople.com.

About The owner of The Lice People:

Taryn Kukle, founder of The Lice People, struggled with an infestation of lice in her home.  She had tried many methods including taking a “lice vacation” from her home for three days. She spent unnecessary money and time on over-the-counter remedies based on misconceptions and myths. Taryn educated herself on lice and their life cycle and found that the non-toxic, thorough process of strand-by-strand removal of lice and nits is the most effective strategy.  She knows firsthand the stress that comes with a head lice infestation, and has made it her goal to share her knowledge with as many parents and children as possible.

Toronto Urban Strolls Review

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Toronto Urban StrollsNathalie Prezeau has just released a superb new book entitled Toronto Urban Strolls … for girlfriends that should be at the top of everyone’s gift list for new parents and girlfriends in the GTA.

Why?

Nathalie Prezeau has done all the work for you in mapping out walks to explore and discover the exciting, interesting and delicious corners of Toronto.

The book hasn’t left my bedside table since I received it. It reads like the secrets and tips a trusted girlfriend tells you about places you ‘have to’ visit, and you write down for safekeeping. The one hundred and ninety-two pages offer an inviting visual guide, with maps and over eight hundred glossy colour photos.

Nathalie has organized all of her knowledge, research and findings into twenty-eight fun themed walks complete with surprising urban sights. Examples include the Beltline (Backyards Strolls), Downtown (Courtyards Stroll), King East (Design Stroll), Liberty Village (Casual Stroll) and more. In the midst of the strolls, Nathalie points out quaint cafes, all day breakfast places, scrumptious bakeries and cool shops to make the strolls truly memorable, and worth revisiting.

What better way could there be to create a mini adventure with your baby or friends, when the planning has already been done. Even the distance and parking tips are included to ensure that your expectations are met.

I already know that I will be buying several more copies of Toronto Urban Strolls … for girlfriends as birthday gifts because it is a resource that will help make every urban walk special.

Learn more about the girlfriends-tested guide to exciting Toronto walks by Nathalie Prezeau at www.torontourbanstrolls.com.
